EDUCATION FOR 19 CHILDREN IN EAST SUMBA

On January 31, 2023, until February 3, 2023, Westerlaken foundation/Yayasan Bali Bersih helped 19 children in East Sumba, East Nusa Tenggara to pay their semester tuition fees. These children used to live in the Jodie O'Shea house in Bali, and were reunited with their families. Our foundation representative Pak Cornelis supervises the process of helping these families.

After the reunification program, we continue to help the ex-Jodie O'Shea house clients who are still in school to get a proper education. We also provide notebooks in each semester to decrease the school need costs of each child's parents. We are committed to continuing this help for the education of children in East Sumba so they can complete their education and graduate from senior high school.

In the future, Westerlaken foundation/Yayasan Bali Bersih through e the Jodie O'Shea Children Fund, is looking forward to raising more funding to support these children and prevent submission to other orphanages. We hope that through this assistance we can reduce and even stop child care in orphanages for the reason of poverty and education.

The Stop Orphanages Campaign is an initiative spearheaded by Westerlaken Foundation and Yayasan Bali Bersih. Its primary objective is to combat the exploitation of children and the use of orphanages as a means of personal gain, and children as a marketing tool. While we acknowledge that there are Child Welfare Institutions (LKSA) in Indonesia that genuinely prioritize the well-being of children, extensive research reveals that a majority of orphanages in Bali, Indonesia operate in violation of the National Standard for Child Welfare Institutions (30/HUK/2011). This standard explicitly prohibits the institutionalization of children based on poverty or limited access to education, as well as emphasizes the importance of empowering families and preventing the recruitment of children into orphanages.
